Ice Skating Tips from the “Can Do Kids

Thursday, December 28th, 2017

The day after Christmas found several of the “Can Dos” ice skating on the new ice rink behind the community center.

Jay has his own skates and is a good skater. He learned to ice skate when he was three, before he and his family came to “Can Do” Street. Annie and Kathy are also good ice skaters, but Nellie and Willie and Arthur J. are beginner level skaters. They need to take lessons and get help from the other “Can Dos’ who know how to skate.

Here are some ice skating tips from Jay, Annie and Kathy to help you do your best when ice skating:

The Field Trip

field trip

Sometimes you need to take the “Can Dos” on a field trip thought Miss Sue, the recreation center director.

The “Can Dos” were bored, bored, bored! It was the first day of winter recess; it was too cold to play outside. The snow and ice piles behind the recreation center were taller than them and were blocking them from riding their sleds down the best hill for sledding in all of “Can Do” Street. The ice skating rink was covered with snow and off limits.

They were tired of playing games in the recreation center gym. Even Annie was tired of shooting baskets! They had been having play dates with each other since Thursday, and they were starting to squabble with one another.

Miss Sue was running out of ideas on how to keep them busy. When she saw Grandpa Dooley in the music room, she went in and asked for his advice. “The Can Dos” are feeling all cooped up. They are not interested in any more board games, or playing basketball or volleyball in the gym tomorrow. How about a field trip, but where to go in winter?”

“Hmmm,” said Grandpa Dooley. “How much money do we have in the budget for a field trip?” Miss Sue answered,  “We canceled a trip because of the weather so far. We can afford a field trip. What do you have in mind?” Grandpa smiled, “Just leave it to me,” he said. “You call the parents and get their permission for the trip. Tell them we have a field trip planned for tomorrow, and it’s a surprise. Ask them to hide their Can Do’s bathing suit and a towel in his or her bag”.

The next day dawned cold and clear. It was perfect weather for a field trip. When the “Can Dos” arrived at the rec center they were told to keep their coats and hats on and line up outside for a surprise field trip. Hector wanted to know where they were going. Kathy called out, “What are we going to do?”

When the bus pulled out, and the rec center faded from view, Grandpa Dooley announced their destination. They were spending the day at the Boy Scout Camp in the next town. Some of their parents would meet the bus there to help with the day’s activities.

The “Can Dos” looked at each other and then exploded with questions. The first question Grandpa Dooley heard, over all the yelling, was from Hector. “What’s so good about going on a field trip where we have to be indoors at the Boy Scout Camp?”

Grandpa chuckled. How does a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the woods, followed by swimming in a heated pool, followed by lunch around the fireplace with storytelling sound to you?”

First there was silence and looks of amazement, and then the “Can Dos” broke out with a roar of cheering about the field trip.

Ice Skates… Who Got New Ones…Who Got Their First Pair

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

The day after Christmas was cold and clear. It was a perfect day for trying out new ice skates at the ice rink.

Jay got new skates. He is a good skater. He learned to ice skate when he was three, before he and his family came to “Can Do” Street. Annie and Kathy are also good ice skaters, but Nellie and Willie and Arthur J. are just beginners at ice skating. They need to take lessons and get help from the other “Can Dos’ who know how to skate.

Here are some ice skating tips from Jay, Annie and Kathy to help you if you are new at ice skating:

  • Don’t push. If you are not doing well, wait a while and try again.
  • Bring a pocketful of small stuffed animals and if the rink’s not crowded practice bending over to pick them up.
  • Play Red Light, Green Light to practice starting and stopping.
  • Make sure to lace or cinch your boots tightly. If your foot wobbles in its skate boot, you won’t have any stability on the ice.
  • Unless you are playing ice hockey, don’t wear knee pads. Instructors say they restrict moving too much.
  • To improve your balance, don’t look at your feet and hold your arms out in front, as if putting them on a table.
  •  Grab your knees if you feel a fall coming on. This will lower your center of gravity and may prevent the fall.

Keep practicing and you will get good at ice skating. It is great fun and good exercise.

Happy Skating!

Kathy is a Flat Leaver!

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Nellie got out of Grandma Hattie’s car and ran up to Grandma Maureen’s house to call for Kathy.

KathyShe and Kathy had a play date. They were going ice skating at the community center rink.

She rang the bell and Grandma Maureen answered. “Hi Grandma Maureen,” said Nellie. “Grandma Hattie is going to drive Kathy and me to the ice rink for a play date.”

Grandma Maureen looked concerned and said, “Nellie, Kathy isn’t here. She left an hour ago with Maria, They were going to see the new movie opening today at the “Can Do” theater.”

Nellie got teary eyed and when she spoke it was in an angry voice, saying,”Kathy and I made skating plans on Monday and we talked about it again yesterday. She knew I was coming to pick her up today. How could she just go off and not even call me and cancel our play date? That’s not fair, why she is nothing more than a flat leaver!”

With that, Nellie turned and ran back to the car. Grandma Maureen followed her.  By the time Grandma Maureen got to the car, Nellie had told Grandma Hattie what had happened.  The grandmas talked outside the car and then Grandma Maureen told Nellie that she would have Kathy call her and apologize.

“No,” answered Nellie. “I don’t want her to call. What she did was wrong and mean. She is a flat leaver, a kid who promises to do something with one friend and then ,if she gets a better offer, goes off with someone else and leaves the first friend flat.”

Grandma Maureen had to agree that what Kathy did was not something that friends do to each other. She decided to let the girls sort it out themselves.

On the way to the ice rink Grandma Hattie asked Nellie what she was going to do about Kathy.

“Well, said Nellie, “When I see her in school on Monday I am going to tell her that she hurt my feelings. I am going to say that I don’t want to make plans to do anything with her because I  don’t trust a flat leaver!”

The Surprise

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Every Saturday, when the “Can Dos” came to the Community Center, they would hear lots of construction noise coming from behind the building. Sometimes they would peer out the window but all they could see was an 8 foot high fence all around a very big field that had never been used for anything before.

Every time they asked Miss Sue, the Community Center Director, what was going on she would smile and answer, “It’s a surprise. You will see it soon enough.

The “Can Dos” would spend their lunch hour trying to guess what it might be. They would ask the other teachers, but nobody would give away the surprise.

Then the invitations arrives at their homes. Everyone in the family was invited to the grand unveiling of the surprise. Wow! It was to happen in the evening, at 7:30 PM and afterwards there would be cocoa and cookies. The “Can Dos” could hardly contain themselves. They were so excited!

Finally the big night arrived. Everyone gathered around the big fence and waited for the surprise to appear. All of a sudden the sides of the fence came down and there was the most beautiful ice skating rink they had ever seen! Wow…what a surprise!

Everyone who wanted to got to go inside and put on brand new rental skates and try out the rink.

Later, when having refreshments, Miss Sue announced that everyone who was a member of the community center could skate for free. There would be lessons for those who wanted to learn how to skate and special sessions for kids of all ages and for adults.

On the walk home Annie asked Grandma Maureen if it was too late to change what she wanted for Christmas. Was there still time for Santa to pack some skates for her?  Grandma Maureen winked at Grandpa John and suggested that Annie write the letter that very night!

All the “Can Dos” agreed…it was just about the best surprise ever!
