The Main Idea

ideaMiss Pat was concerned that the “Can Dos” were having problems with identifying the main idea in stories. Here is a story she gave the “Can Dos” to help them recognize the main idea.

She also asked them to find misspelled word or words that need to be capitalized. Why not try the activity and see how well you do?

The story:

Mark trys to be friendes with Jim, the new boi in school. First, Mark smiles at Jim in the lunch room. Mark has a dog. Then, he plays with Jim after lunch. Finally, he shares a seat with Jim on the school bus.

By the end of the day…

Directions:

Put a star(*) next to the sentence in the beginning that tells the main idea.

Underline sentences in the middle that have details that say more about the main idea.

Cross out the sentence in the middle that does not belong to the main idea.

Circle the words that are misspelled or need to begin with a capital letter.

Write an ending for the end of the story.

Be sure and have your parent or older brother or sister check your work to see how you did.

Writing About Time

Time of DayWendy loves to write about time. Miss Pat thought about stories that would help the “Can Dos” understand more about sentences that describe writing about time. She asked Wendy to write two of them to be read in class.

Here are a few stories that Wendy wrote about time. Why not see how well you can figure out the times they are talking about. Remember, time is more than a time of day. It can be a time of the year, a time in history, a time in the future, a season of the year, and a holiday time.

Story 1 about time: It was getting dark. Snowflakes were falling on my nose. I put my hood up over my head. I looked at a clock in the store window. In fifteen minutes it would be suppertime.

Questions:

What is the weather like ?______________________________________

Story 2 about time: Hector, Bobby and Willie went camping with their grandpas. The campsite was really cool. There were lots of big leafy trees. The lake was so close we could see it from our tents. We used branches and twigs on the ground for our campfire. The night was so dark, we could see so many stars in the sky. It was fun out there.

Hector Is Not So Good at Doing Chores

Hector FrontHector is great at eating, sleeping, skateboarding, computers and math but he is not good at doing his chores.

Hector and his sister Maria have chores. Hector’s mom says,”We all live in this house and we all need to do our fair share of keeping the house nice.”  Hector agrees but when it is time to do his chores he forgets or hopes his mom will forget!

One of Hector’s chores is to empty the garbage every night after dinner. He always puts it off. When his mom reminds him,  he says he will do it in a few minutes. Most of the time he doesn’t do it.

Hector and Maria are supposed to make their beds each morning. Most mornings Hector doesn’t make his bed. He is also supposed to put his dirty clothes in the hamper each night. Most times he throws them in the corner of his room. By Friday he is often out of underwear.

Hector’s mom says if he doesn’t start doing his chores he is not going to be able to watch his favorite TV show and lose time on the family computer.

The First Day Back to School After the Holidays

The first day back to school after the holiday was cold and rainy. The “Can Dos” were having a hard time concentrating on school work.

Luckily, Miss Pat knew the “Can Dos”needed some help getting back in the school grove. So, she made two computer games to ease them back into their computer lessons.

She made two matching games about the toys the children got.

Ice Skates… Who Got New Ones…Who Got Their First Pair

The day after Christmas was cold and clear. It was a perfect day for trying out new ice skates at the ice rink.

Jay got new skates. He is a good skater. He learned to ice skate when he was three, before he and his family came to “Can Do” Street. Annie and Kathy are also good ice skaters, but Nellie and Willie and Arthur J. are just beginners at ice skating. They need to take lessons and get help from the other “Can Dos’ who know how to skate.

Here are some ice skating tips from Jay, Annie and Kathy to help you if you are new at ice skating:

  • Don’t push. If you are not doing well, wait a while and try again.
  • Bring a pocketful of small stuffed animals and if the rink’s not crowded practice bending over to pick them up.
  • Play Red Light, Green Light to practice starting and stopping.
  • Make sure to lace or cinch your boots tightly. If your foot wobbles in its skate boot, you won’t have any stability on the ice.
  • Unless you are playing ice hockey, don’t wear knee pads. Instructors say they restrict moving too much.
  • To improve your balance, don’t look at your feet and hold your arms out in front, as if putting them on a table.
  •  Grab your knees if you feel a fall coming on. This will lower your center of gravity and may prevent the fall.

Keep practicing and you will get good at ice skating. It is great fun and good exercise.
