Homophones Matching Games

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

homophonesMiss Pat was getting ready to teach the class about homophones, those words that sound alike, but have different meanings and different spellings.

She asked the class, “Can anyone tell me what homophones are?” The whole class stared at her with blank looks on their faces. Even Orrie was stumped!

Miss Pat continued, “Can anyone tell me what homonyms are?” Orrie’s hand went up like a shot. When called on, he answered, “Homonyms are words that sound alike but have different meanings.” Miss Pat smiled and said, “Very good, Orrie.

Homophones are a type of homonyms that also sound alike and have different meanings, but they also have different spellings.”

“Huh,” said Hector, ” Can you give us a few examples of homophones?” The class nodded their agreement.

“Okay,” said Miss Pat here are two examples of homophones. I will even use them in a sentence.

Witch and Which

I am going to be a witch on Halloween.

Which one of you wants to write on the blackboard?

Break and Brake

Don’t break that glass, or you will have to pay for it.

Is the brake on your bike working properly?”

Miss Pat waited for her examples to sink in and then she announced, “Now we are going to play some computer matching games that use homophones. Be sure to pay close attention as tomorrow  I will give you a quiz on some of the homophones you match today.”

Then Miss Pat had the class go to their computers and play the Words that sound alike games.

Time for Word Jumble!

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Well, the daily new vocabulary words were taking longer to learn. Miss Pat knew she had to come up with something special at the end of every vocabulary session to reward the “Can Do” kids for their hard work.

Since they love word jumbles she decided to give them a word jumble every time they did well.

Here is one they got after a pop spelling quiz.

Just print it out and see how you do.

Kathy is a Flat Leaver!

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Nellie got out of Grandma Hattie’s car and ran up to Grandma Maureen’s house to call for Kathy.

KathyShe and Kathy had a play date. They were going ice skating at the community center rink.

She rang the bell and Grandma Maureen answered. “Hi Grandma Maureen,” said Nellie. “Grandma Hattie is going to drive Kathy and me to the ice rink for a play date.”

Grandma Maureen looked concerned and said, “Nellie, Kathy isn’t here. She left an hour ago with Maria, They were going to see the new movie opening today at the “Can Do” theater.”

Nellie got teary eyed and when she spoke it was in an angry voice, saying,”Kathy and I made skating plans on Monday and we talked about it again yesterday. She knew I was coming to pick her up today. How could she just go off and not even call me and cancel our play date? That’s not fair, why she is nothing more than a flat leaver!”

With that, Nellie turned and ran back to the car. Grandma Maureen followed her.  By the time Grandma Maureen got to the car, Nellie had told Grandma Hattie what had happened.  The grandmas talked outside the car and then Grandma Maureen told Nellie that she would have Kathy call her and apologize.

“No,” answered Nellie. “I don’t want her to call. What she did was wrong and mean. She is a flat leaver, a kid who promises to do something with one friend and then ,if she gets a better offer, goes off with someone else and leaves the first friend flat.”

Grandma Maureen had to agree that what Kathy did was not something that friends do to each other. She decided to let the girls sort it out themselves.

On the way to the ice rink Grandma Hattie asked Nellie what she was going to do about Kathy.

“Well, said Nellie, “When I see her in school on Monday I am going to tell her that she hurt my feelings. I am going to say that I don’t want to make plans to do anything with her because I  don’t trust a flat leaver!”

Name That Country!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

The “Can Dos” are not very interested in geography, so Miss Pat installed a new game on their computers hoping it would make them more interested in a lesson about naming each country in Europe.

The new game is a puzzle. It is a map of Europe. To play you need  to match the shapes of the puzzle pieces to the shape of the country.

To play along with the “Can Do” Kids, just go to the “Can Do” Club House, choose more games and choose “Europe Jigsaw Puzzle.”

Let’s see how you well you know geography. Name that country!

A New Word Jumble

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Evert time the “Can Dos” have a long weekend, or a school break, the best word to describe their first day back to class…tough.

On days like this, mostly all of the boys and girls have a hard time settling in and paying attention.

Miss Pat tries to have new word exercises every day so the “Can Dos” can build their vocabulary, but after a school break, she needs to use word games to get and hold their attention.

So  here is the word game, a word jumble to be exact, that Miss Pat gave the class to do.

Why not print the word jumble and see how you do?
