Miss Pat Didn’t Let the “Can Dos” Finish Reading

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

PatTeacher Pat gathered the “Can Do” Kids around her for story time and asked “Class, what story shall we read today?”

Willie raised his hand. “Yes Willie,” said Teacher Pat. I’d like to read a Halloween story from the book my grandma gave me,” said Willie.

“Willie, you will need to pass the book around so the rest of the class can each read a little from your book,” said Miss Pat. “That’s fine  with me Miss Pat,” said Willie.Pat

“The name of my book is the Pumpkin Patch,” shared Willie. He began to read, “Long ago a farmer had a pumpkin patch, with rows and rows of bright orange pumpkins. There must have been a hundred of them.”

“Willie, time to pass the book to your right and let Wendy read a few lines,” said Teacher Pat. Wendy began to read, “The farmer promised the children of the town they could each pick out a pumpkin for Halloween to carve with their families and put in their living room windows.”

“It’s Arthur J’s  turn Wendy,” said Teacher Pat.

Arthur J began to read,”The f-f-f-farmer told the ch-ch-ch-children that the p-p-p-p-pumpkins were almost ready to p-p-p-pick.'”

Arthur J stopped reading because some of his classmates were laughing at him.

Miss Pat said, “Thank you Arthur J. Please return the book to Willie. Story time is over for today.”

Questions:

Do you know why Miss Pat ended story time when she did?

Why were some of the kids laughing at Arthur J?

What do you think about them laughing?

What would you have done?

Kathy is a Flat Leaver!

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Nellie got out of Grandma Hattie’s car and ran up to Grandma Maureen’s house to call for Kathy.

KathyShe and Kathy had a play date. They were going ice skating at the community center rink.

She rang the bell and Grandma Maureen answered. “Hi Grandma Maureen,” said Nellie. “Grandma Hattie is going to drive Kathy and me to the ice rink for a play date.”

Grandma Maureen looked concerned and said, “Nellie, Kathy isn’t here. She left an hour ago with Maria, They were going to see the new movie opening today at the “Can Do” theater.”

Nellie got teary eyed and when she spoke it was in an angry voice, saying,”Kathy and I made skating plans on Monday and we talked about it again yesterday. She knew I was coming to pick her up today. How could she just go off and not even call me and cancel our play date? That’s not fair, why she is nothing more than a flat leaver!”

With that, Nellie turned and ran back to the car. Grandma Maureen followed her.  By the time Grandma Maureen got to the car, Nellie had told Grandma Hattie what had happened.  The grandmas talked outside the car and then Grandma Maureen told Nellie that she would have Kathy call her and apologize.

“No,” answered Nellie. “I don’t want her to call. What she did was wrong and mean. She is a flat leaver, a kid who promises to do something with one friend and then ,if she gets a better offer, goes off with someone else and leaves the first friend flat.”

Grandma Maureen had to agree that what Kathy did was not something that friends do to each other. She decided to let the girls sort it out themselves.

On the way to the ice rink Grandma Hattie asked Nellie what she was going to do about Kathy.

“Well, said Nellie, “When I see her in school on Monday I am going to tell her that she hurt my feelings. I am going to say that I don’t want to make plans to do anything with her because I  don’t trust a flat leaver!”

Is Sharing Always a Good Idea?

Friday, March 25th, 2011

picture of grandma Maureen Grandma Maureen and Arthur J saw a situation that made them ask, “Is sharing always a good idea”?

Grandma Maureen and her grandson Arthur J were having lunch out at the diner on “Can Do” Street.  At the table next to them there were two mothers and their sons also having lunch. The boys looked and sounded like they were about 3 years old.

The one boy kept bouncing around on his seat, whining and hanging on to his mother’s arm. The other boy ate his lunch quietly and let his mom enjoy her lunch.

The waiter came over to the table and asked if the boys wanted a treat. The boy who had been eating quietly was finished his lunch and asked his mom if he could have an ice cream. His mom said yes. The other boy had left most of his lunch on his plate, but his mother asked him if he wanted ice cream. ” No,” he said loudly, “I want a smoothie.” His mom reminded him that he didn’t eat his lunch and a smoothie would be a lot to drink. He began to cry and slide down in his seat. His mom gave in and ordered him a smoothie.

When the treats arrived, the boy with the ice cream was enjoying his treat, while the boy with the smoothie took a couple of sips and said, “I don’t want this. I want ice cream.”

Grandma Maureen and Arthur J couldn’t help listening and watching. They wanted to see what would happen next!

The mother of the boy who wanted the ice cream turned to the other boy and said, ” Would you mind sharing half of your ice cream “? Before the boy could even answer, his own mother took his bowl of ice cream, scooped out half of it and gave it to the other boy!

Grandma Maureen and Arthur J couldn’t believe their eyes!

The boy who lost half his ice cream pulled his dish close to him and gobbled up what was left as fast as he could. The other boy grinned at him while eating what was once his ice cream.

Arthur J felt mad about what he had just seen. “Grandma,” he said, ” That  just wasn’t fair!  The boy never got a chance to say whether or not he wanted to share. He was forced to share. I don’t know who I feel madder at, the selfish boy who took his ice cream and ate it, or  the mom who asked him to share his ice cream, or his mom who just took his dish and gave his ice cream away. “

Grandma Maureen nodded and said, “Sharing isn’t always a good idea. There were lots of ways that could have been handled fairly. Maybe the boys and girls hearing this story can come up with some other ways than what we just saw.”

What do you think boys and girls? Do you have any ideas?
