Some of the “Can Do” Kids Take a Writing Class

Wendy FrontWendy is the “Can Do Kid who loves to write. She writes every day. That is why Wendy is so good at writing.

Most of the other “Can Do” Kids do well with writing but…Bobby, Eulyn, Maria and Yundi, Wendy’s brother, need to get better at writing. When the community center announced that there would be a beginner writing class for young kids, in the early grades of elementary school, their moms enrolled them in the class.

Maria and Eulyn were willing to go every Saturday morning for 4 weeks. They knew they needed help with writing.

However, Bobby and Yundi were really unhappy about having to take the class. After all, it was baseball season, and they were on the team. How would the team get along without them?

Eulyn, Maria, Yundi and Bobby were thrilled to discover that their teacher was Miss Pat! Miss Pat was concerned that the “Can Dos” were having problems with identifying the main idea in stories. So she started the class with the following story to help them recognize the main idea . Read the story and see if you can pick out the main idea of the story

The Story:

Mark trys to be friendes with Jim, the new boi in school. First, Mark smils at Jim in the lunch room. Mark has a dog. Mark plaes with Jim after lunch.. Finalliy, he shares a seat with Jim on the school bus.

When the  “Can Dos” finished picking out the main idea of the story, Miss Pat gave them directions for doing other things with the story. Just follow the directions and correct the errors in each sentence.

Directions:

Underline sentences that have details that say more about the main idea.

Cross out the sentence that does not belong to the main idea.

Circle the words that are misspelled or need to begin with a capital letter.

Why not get busy writing an ending for the story?

Be sure and have your parent or older brother or sister check your work to see how you did.

Why Does a Cat Purr?

catWendy, Nellie, Bobby and Hector stopped by Grandpa John’s store after school for a snack. As they were waiting to pay Grandpa John, they heard Can Do Cat purring as he lay curled up near the front door.”Why does a cat purr,” asked Nellie?

Grandpa John answered,” If you all trade in those sodas for some healthy juices, I will tell you all about why a cat purrs.” the “Can Dos” put their sodas back and picked out some fresh fruit juices. then they sat in a circle, in front of Can Do Cat and waited for Grandpa John to begin.

“I read a book, The Cat’s Mind, by Bruce Fogle,  a pet doctor,” said Grandpa John. “He says that purring lets a kitten to tell his mother that things are well. A kitten can purr when it is only two days old.

Purring is an important part of how cats talk. They purr for lots of reasons. As the cat grows up, the meaning of the purr changes. Some cats purr when they feel good, while other cats purr when they are frightened.

Whatever the reason for purring, it sounds nice to us humans and is pleasant to hear isn’t it?”

The “Can Dos” nodded. Yes, it was nice to watch “Can Do”Cat resting in the corner and listen to him purr. Wendy said,” I think he is purring because he likes it when we visit!”

“Could be,” answered Grandpa John.”It just could be the reason.”

The “Can Do” Chefs Club Does Asian for International Day

The “Can Do” Chefs Club received an invitation from Miss Sue to make  lunch for the kindergarteners on International Day at the “Can Do” Street Community Center.

Miss Sue’s invitation read, “Please prepare a lunch that will be suitable for celebrating International Day.”

“Huh,” said Hector. “Wow, that’s hard, “said Nellie. Kathy just looked blank as she tried to think of something to make that would fit an International Day and that young kids would be willing to eat.

Then Yundi said,”I’ve got it,” said Yundi. “We make an Asian lunch. We serve sushi and teach the kids to use chopsticks.” The rest of the Chefs Club members just stared at him and Kathy said, “What little kid, that isn’t Asian, would eat raw fish?” everyone laughed, even Yundi.

Yundi said,”We won’t make sushi with fish. We’ll make peanut butter and jelly sushi rolls.” And that is just what they did!

Oh, the kindergarteners just loved it! Miss Sue was so pleased and all the parents were so impressed with what the “Can Do” Chefs Club members managed to do for International Day.

chefs clubRecipe: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sushi Rolls

  • Prep Time: 3 min
  • Cook Time: 0 min
  • Yield: 1 serving (8 pieces)

 Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons Jif® Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Smucker’s® Strawberry Jelly, or any Smucker’s® Jam, Jelly or Preserves of your choice
  • 2 slices bread

Directions:

  1. REMOVE crusts from bread. With a rolling pin or large soup can, completely flatten bread.
  2. SPREAD 1 tablespoon peanut butter and 1 tablespoon fruit spread on each slice of bread
  3. ROLL each slice into a tight spiral. Cut each spiral into 4 pieces.
