Just for Fun

Saturday, January 18th, 2014

Miss Pat couldn’t help but notice that the “Can Do” Kids were not into vocabulary building today. They needed a fun break. How could she make vocabulary fun?

Hmmm…she thought. How about a word jumble and a word search? That ought to be more that a few minutes of fun. So she gave the “Can Dos” the following teacher printouts  to do.

Why don’t you print out these handouts and have a fun break? The fist jumble is about animals. The second images is about things we see in the spring.

Rhyme

Friday, November 8th, 2013

The “Can Dos” weren’t very interested in learning about rhyme.

They just didn’t get it. So Miss Pat invited her friend, Alan Fishbone to come to class and read some of the rhymes he wrote when he was their age. Miss Pat went to school with Mr. Fishbone, and she remembered how much fun his rhymes were. His rhymes also helped the rest of the class to understand how you go about rhyming.

When Mr. Fishbone came to class, he shared the following poems and the “Can Dos got it! The “Can Dos” understood and started to write using rhyme and have fun with it.

   Question and Rhyme

How do rhinos kiss you say

With such big horns atop their noses?

Well, they do just fine you see

As long as neither rhino dozes.

Rhinos don’t watch TVs

Nor go to school with suitcase lunches,

but they hear the whispering trees

And gobble grapes in purple bunches.

Rhyme

Hickory Dickory Dock

The mouse ran up the clock:

Well, I’ve heard this before,

But what about the Knock Knock Knock

The whiskered cat taps at his door

While he is tucked away in his bed

And snoring as a mouse will snore

With dreams of cheese around his head?

OK boys and girls at home, how are you at rhyme?

Halloween Mazes

Saturday, October 19th, 2013

The “Can Dos” were restless in class. Miss Pat chalked it up to the coming of Halloween.

It was almost the end of the school day. She looked at the class and said, ” Okay “Can Dos’ who is up for working on some Halloween mazes?” A cheer went up! The “Can Dos” love mazes.

Boys and girls at home, why not try the Halloween mazes with the “Can Dos”? Just print them out and enjoy!

Some of the “Can Do” Kids Take a Writing Class

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Wendy FrontWendy is the “Can Do Kid who loves to write. She writes every day. That is why Wendy is so good at writing.

Most of the other “Can Do” Kids do well with writing but…Bobby, Eulyn, Maria and Yundi, Wendy’s brother, need to get better at writing. When the community center announced that there would be a beginner writing class for young kids, in the early grades of elementary school, their moms enrolled them in the class.

Maria and Eulyn were willing to go every Saturday morning for 4 weeks. They knew they needed help with writing.

However, Bobby and Yundi were really unhappy about having to take the class. After all, it was baseball season, and they were on the team. How would the team get along without them?

Eulyn, Maria, Yundi and Bobby were thrilled to discover that their teacher was Miss Pat! Miss Pat was concerned that the “Can Dos” were having problems with identifying the main idea in stories. So she started the class with the following story to help them recognize the main idea . Read the story and see if you can pick out the main idea of the story

The Story:

Mark trys to be friendes with Jim, the new boi in school. First, Mark smils at Jim in the lunch room. Mark has a dog. Mark plaes with Jim after lunch.. Finalliy, he shares a seat with Jim on the school bus.

When the  “Can Dos” finished picking out the main idea of the story, Miss Pat gave them directions for doing other things with the story. Just follow the directions and correct the errors in each sentence.

Directions:

Underline sentences that have details that say more about the main idea.

Cross out the sentence that does not belong to the main idea.

Circle the words that are misspelled or need to begin with a capital letter.

Why not get busy writing an ending for the story?

Be sure and have your parent or older brother or sister check your work to see how you did.

Have fun!

” Huh,” said Bobby, “what’s that?” Teacher Pat smiled and said, “Just go to http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/science/index.htm and you can see for yourself!”

“Wow!” yelled Annie,” this site has games, and stories and activities about our environment. It is really cool.”

The rest of the class session passed so quickly as the “Can Do” kids explored a new, interesting site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
