Cheating

Monday, February 1st, 2016

cheatingYundi caught up with Bobby on the walk to school. By the look on Bobby’s face, Yundi could tell there was something wrong. “What’s wrong Bobby,” asked Yundi.

Bobby answered, “I didn’t study for the math test today and now I will probably fail.”

Yundi asked Bobby why he didn’t study. “Well,” said Bobby, “There was a show I wanted to see and when it was over my mom said it was time for bed.”

Yundi just looked at Bobby and shook his head.”What are you going to do?”

Bobby thought a minute, then said, “I know, I sit next to you. I’ll just copy your answers if I can’t do the problems.

Yundi got read in the face and said, “That’s cheating!”

Bobby said,”No it’s not. You’re just helping me out. You’re my friend aren’t you?”

Yundi sputtered, “Yeah, I’m your friend, but friends don’t ask friends to help them with cheating on a test. Besides, why should I let you take my answers? I studied hard and didn’t get to watch any TV last night so I could do well on this test. Now I’m supposed to let you cheat by taking my answers…no fair, Bobby. No fair!”

Bobby got all upset and said, “What am I going to do? if I fail, my mom will make me stay in for a week and I won’t get to go to the skating party on Saturday.”

Yundi was so mad at Bobby for asking him to help him with cheating on the test that he had no sympathy for Bobby. He said, “You should have thought about that last night!”

Bobby said,”You can’t stop me. I sit next to you. When Miss Pat isn’t looking, I’ll just peak at your paper.”cheating

Yundi was so mad! “You do and I’ll raise my hand and tell Miss Pat.”

“You wouldn’t,” said Bobby. “Oh yes I would,” said Yundi. Then Yundi walked away from Bobby and walked the rest of the way to school by himself.

Questions:

Was Bobby being fair to Yundi? Was Yundi being a friend to Bobby?

Would you ever ask a friend to help you with cheating on a test? Would you ask a friend to let you copy his or her homework?

Is copying someone’s homework cheating?

Sunday, January 24th, 2016

the 5Ws and 1HMiss Pat called the class to order and said, “Everyone take out his or her copy of Arthur J’s story, ‘A Bath for Scooter’ and let’s review the 5Ws and 1H of the story.”

Hector looked confused. “Miss Pat,” said Hector, “Please remind me what the 5Ws and 1H are.”

Miss Pat smiled and said, “Every story usually answers the following questions:

What happens in the story?

Who does it happen to?

Why does it happen?

When does it happen?

Where does it happen?

and

How does it happen?

“Hmmm,” said Hector as he picked up his pencil and began to read Arthur’s story again.

The class grew quiet as each “Can Do” made a list of the 5Ws and 1H. Then each “Can Do” wrote the answers after each one of the 5Ws and 1H.

Okay, ready for the answers to the 5Ws and 1H?

What is the story about? A bath

Who does it happen to? Scooter

Why does it happen? Scooter got in the trash and got sticky

When does it happen? Yesterday

Where does it happen? The bath happens in the bathroom sink

How does the bath happen?  Bobby puts him in the sink and washes him with soap and water

Boys and girls reading this..how did you do with the 5Ws and 1H?

The Pumpkin Surprise

Monday, September 28th, 2015

pumpkin“Class, I have a pumpkin surprise for you,” said Miss Pat. “I love surprises,” said Kathy, but what kind of surprise is a pumpkin surprise?”

“Yeah, a surprise,” shouted Hector.

“Settle down children so I can introduce Mr. Dooley, Willlie and Nellie’s grandpa who is bringing the pumpkin  surprise,” said Miss Pat.

Just then Mr. Dooley rolled a big cart full of pumpkins into the room. All the “Can Do” Kids were jumping around in their seats and yelling,” I want a pumpkin.” Miss Pat said,”No one gets a pumpkin until there is quiet in the room so Mr. Dooley can tell you what we are going to do and how we are going to do it.”

Mr. Dooley smiled and waved to his grandchildren Willie and Nellie. “Hello boys and girls,” he said,  “I brought some pumpkins for us to decorate and some decorations. I  have markers to draw a nose and mouth and eyes right on the pumpkin or you can use these paints to decorate the pumpkin. Another way we can decorate is to draw eyes, a nose, a  mouth and hair and color them, cut them out and  glue them to the pumpkin.”

“I want to carve my pumpkin,” yelled Hector. Mr Dooley answered, “Your too young to use a knife by yourself to cut out a pumpkin and I can’t help everyone who would want to carve out a pumpkin. Besides, your pumpkin will last longer if you don’t carve it, but decorate it instead.”

“Alright children, form a line, no pushing or cutting in front of one another and go up to the cart and pick out your pumpkin and your decorations. When you get back to your seat you can start decorating your pumpkin. If you get started right away, you will be finished in time to take your pumpkin home with you today,” said Miss Pat.

The children were working on their pumpkins and Mr. Dooley was starting to leave. What did they need to do? That’s right they needed to all say,”Thank you Mr. Dooley for the wonderful pumpkin surprise!”pumpkin

Tidy Up

Tuesday, April 7th, 2015

tidy upMiss Pat looked up and saw Hector throwing a piece of paper on the floor. Wow, she thought, Hector doesn’t tidy up after himself; he expects others to clean up after him.

Miss Pat said, “Hector, what are you doing?” Hector turned red and said, “Nothing Miss Pat.” Miss Pat walked over to where he was sitting and picked up the paper he had crumpled up and thrown on the floor. She handed him the paper and said, “Hector where does this paper belong?”  Hector mumbled, “In the trash Miss Pat.”

Miss Pat looked at Hector and said, “Well, if you know where it belongs why throw it on the floor?” Hector answered, “It was easier to throw it on the floor than get up and go put it in the trash basket.” Then he got up and put the paper in the trash.

Miss Pat told the class to tidy up their table areas before going to lunch. When she came back in the room after lunch she was not happy to see that a couple of the “Can Dos” had left their areas messy. So…when the class came back in after lunch it was time to have a talk about how to tidy up after yourself.

“Class,” said Miss Pat, “I was disappointed to see that some of you don’t know how to tidy up after yourselves. Annie raised her hand and asked, “What does tidy up mean?” Miss Pat smiled and answered, “Well, its a term that my grandma used to use all the time when I was a little girl. It means, clean up.”

Miss Pat thought a minute and then said, “I am going to go around the room and ask each one of you what you do at home to tidy up after yourselves.” As she went around the room there were answers such as…I put my toys away, I throw my dirty clothes in the laundry basket, I make my bed, I clean my dishes off the table after eating, I hang up my coat and hat when I get home.

A few of the “Can D0s” could not think of anything they do at home to tidy up after themselves. Not good thought Miss Pat, especially since these were the “Can Dos” who left their table areas messy. Maybe they don’t know how to tidy up, she thought.

Miss Pat announced, “Children, I have a way we can practice tidying up. It’s a game and we can play it on the computer. Everyone go to your computers. The “Can Dos” were all excited. They loved using the computers.

Do you want to play along with the “Can Dos”? Just go to the “Can Do” Club House, choose more games on the purple balloon and then choose the new game…Tidy Up. You will have fun and your parents will like the game too!
