School Manners

Saturday, November 11th, 2017

Even in school we need to practice good manners. For example, the other day Wendy did  not practice good manners and her classmates, especially Nellie, got really mad at her. Here’s what happened.

It was time to go outside in the school yard for recess. Miss Pat told the class that when everyone had lined up single file, with no talking, she would lead them outside for free play in the school yard.

Miss Pat said, “Remember your manners, class, and we will all get out into the yard quickly and have the most time we can have during recess.”

manners The “Can Dos” lined up, just as Miss Pat asked them to do, when all of a sudden Wendy jumped out of line and cut in front of Nellie, who was at the head of the line.

Nellie  said,”Hey, Get back in your spot! You were behind me line. I was hear first! You’re not supposed to cut in line.”

Wendy answered,  “So what. We’re all going to get there at the same time anyway. Who cares if I cut in line?”

Hector yelled, “Go back. No cutting in line”!

Nellie said,”I care and the  rest of the class cares too. You cut in front of all of us. That’s not fair and it’s selfish.”

Wendy answered, “Is not selfish.”

Nellie said, –”Is too”!

“That’s enough class,” said Miss Pat. “Wendy get back where you were in line. Line cutting is not good manners and it causes problems.

I think you owe your classmates and apology. Your classmates lost recess time as a  result of your cutting in line and the fuss it caused.”

Wendy looked embarrassed. She said, “I’m sorry everyone. I didn’t mean to cause a problem. I just thought it would be fun to be at the front of the line. I promise from now on to practice  good school manners”

Giving Thanks by Giving

Thursday, November 2nd, 2017

cardaying giving thanks

Miss Sue waited until all the “Can Dos” got settled in their seats before she began to speak about her topic, giving. “Good Morning children, she said. “Thank you Miss Pat for allowing me to speak to the class this morning about a new program of the ‘Can Do” Street Community Center, Giving Thanks by Giving.”

Yundi and Wendy beamed with pride as their grandma, Miss Sue, continued to speak to the class. “Thanksgiving is coming and I want to invite you all to be a part of keeping the spirit of giving alive in Thanksgiving,” said Miss Sue.”We have a few weeks to work together on a few projects. I am going to tell you about they projects and then you can each decide what project is for you.

First, there is the clothing drive. We need to collect warm clothing such as coats, hats, gloves and such to give to those families who need warm clothes for the winter. We need men’s and women’s clothing as well as clothing for children and teens.

Second, there is the food drive. We want to stock the food pantry in town with canned goods and boxed foods like pasta and rice for those who need food for their families. We need lots of families giving what they can.

Third, there is the school supplies drive. We want to be able to help out families that can’t afford school supplies by giving their children what they need for the school year.

Willie raised his hand and Miss Sue called on him. “Miss Sue why do people need all these things?” Miss Sue smiled and answered, “That is a good question, Willie. Some families have been having hard times and need a little help to get through until things get better for them.  Some dads and moms, through no fault of their own, have lost their jobs. In other families, a dad or mom has been sick and unable to work, so there isn’t much money to buy what the families need.”

The class was quiet for a few minutes, then Hector raised his hand and said, “I’ve got lots of cousins, uncles and aunts. I will ask them to go through their closets and donate anything they haven’t worn in a year and don’t think they will be needing. I’ll ask my mom and dad and grandparents too.” A few of the “Can Dos” also signed up along with Hector.

Annie volunteered to collect food from family and neighbors for the food pantry. A couple of the other kids in the class did too.

The “Can Do” Kids Cooking Club volunteered to holding a bake sale at the Community Center and said they would be giving all that they raise to buy school supplies.

Soon everyone in the class was signed up for one of the three drives as their way of giving thanks at Thanksgiving.

What about you? Is there a way you can practice giving at Thanksgiving time?

Orrie is the Quiz Kid!

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

It was a rainy, cold Monday and the “Can Do” Kids  were just sitting in their seats looking bored when Miss Pat announced, “Time for a quiz!”

Hector groaned, Bobby rolled his eyes, Eulyn looked nervous and Kathy said out loud, “I hate when we have a quiz!”

Miss Pat said, “Hate is a strong word, Kathy, and not a nice one. How about saying I really don’t like having to take a quiz.”

Miss Pat began to hand out clickers and said, “It is going to be an oral quiz, a game with teams. Tables one and three will complete against tables two and four. Tables one and three are the blue team and tables two and four are the green team. When you think you know the answer click your clicker. Whoever clicks first gets to answer first. If it is the right answer the team gets a point. Whoever gets 20 points first wins the game.

image of Orrie. the quiz kid in his wheel chair“No fair,” said Hector. “Orrie is the smartest kid in the class and he is on the green team. The blue team can’t win against the green team as long as Orrie is on the green team.” The rest of the class just looked at Miss Pat, wondering how she would solve this problem. How could she make it a fair quiz? Would she keep Orrie out of the quiz? That wouldn’t be fair to Orrie.

Miss Pat thought a minute and said,”Let’s ask Orrie what he thinks is fair.” Orrie cleared his throat and said, “How about I play for the blue team for half the quiz and then play for the green team for the second half of the quiz.?”

The class all clapped and Orrie smiled. It wasn’t so often that he got to be an important part of a team with his classmates. At the rec center he was a member of the chess team and the junior scrabble team, but here, in class, with his friends, well, it was really neat to be wanted on both teams!

The quiz was about nutrition.

There were questions about fruits and vegetables and what you could make with them. Some of the questions were hard, all the “Can Do’s” participated and with Orrie’s help, the teams were tied. Then they went into overtime and the blue team won!

Later, Bobby was sitting with Orrie at recess and he said, “You were great in the quiz! How did you get to be so smart?” Orrie smiled and said, “Bobby, it is not that I am so smart, I just like to learn and I spend lots of time researching things on the computer that interest me. I read a lot and that’s why I am a quiz kid.”

The Right Way to Get Attention in Class

Friday, September 29th, 2017

attentionMaria and Eulyn were always yelling out answers to get attention in homeroom and in computer class. So, Miss Pat decided to review the right way to get attention in class.

Miss Pat asked the class what was their favorite breakfast. All of a sudden it wasn’t just Maria and Eulyn that were yelling out answers; Bobby, Jay, Willie and Kathy also were yelling out as well! There was so much noise that Miss Pat couldn’t hear what anyone was saying,

“OK, quiet down children,” said Miss Pat. “That really didn’t work did it?” That is why in class, when we want to ask a question or answer a question or get the teacher’s attention for other reasons, we must first raise our hand. Then when the teacher sees your hand up she will point to you or call your name or both. Then you can speak.”

Them Miss Pat asked the question again, just to see what the class would do. “What is your favorite breakfast food? Eulyn attentionstarted to shout out, but caught herself and raised her hand. The rest of the class all raised their hands.

“Good job,” said Miss Pat.”That’s the right way to get attention in class.” Then she called on Eulyn to hear about Eulyn’s favorite breakfast. Then she gave everyone in class the chance to talk about their favorite breakfasts.

Guess what was the most popular breakfast….toast and jam and chocolate milk!

Remember boys and girls there is a right way and a wrong way to get attention.

Mall Manners

Thursday, May 11th, 2017

mallThe “Can Dos” were all excited about the day’s field trip to a new mall in the next town.

They were going to visit a children’s bookstore where, in addition to seeing and hearing about all the new books for sale, they would be participating in a story time.

After spending most of the morning in the mall book store, they would have lunch in the food court.

Miss Pat called the class to order and said,”Please take your seats. I have an announcement to make and then I want to go over mall manners before we line up for the bus.

The book store owner has offered to give each one of you a free copy of the new book she will be reading from during story time.” The class broke out clapping. When they quieted down, Miss Pat continued, “Before we are can think about whether or not we are getting a free book, we need to think about our behavior in the mall. Did we earn a free book by showing that we know how to behave in a mall. Do we have mall manners”?

The “Can Dos” all got questioning looks on their faces and Hector blurted out,”What are mall manners”? Miss Pat smiled and said, “That’s what we need to talk about. I have seen some of you in a mall and you were not practicing mall manners. You were running and  bumped into other shoppers. One or two of you were fooling around on the escalator…a dangerous thing to do. In the food court you cut in line in front of people who were in line before you got there.”

The “Can Dos” all got quiet. Most had done one of the things Miss Pat mentioned. Then Nellie asked,”What are some other mall manners that we need to know”?

“Well, said Miss Pat, “Here are some other mall behaviors that are important:

  • No yelling or making funny mouth noises
  • No throwing punches, pushing each other, grabbing each others clothing
  • When you use the public bathroom, close the stall door, flush the toilet, wash your hands, and throw the paper towels you use in the trash
  • In the food court, be ready to order when it is your turn, clean up after yourself at the table and throw your garbage in the trash can.”

“Wow,” said Hector,” That’s a lot of things we can’t do. That’s a lot to remember. What can we do”?

Miss Pat smiled and answered,”You can walk and talk with friends, tell jokes, share snacks, look in shop windows, enjoy the book store, have a lunch with friends and see new things. Most of all you can be the proud owner of a new book!”

Later that day, when the class got back from their mall trip, Miss Pat told them how proud she was of their mall manners. Then she opened up the box of new books that the store owner had given her and handed one to each of the “Can Dos!”

You guessed it…the entire class practiced mall manners!”
