Sleepover Manners

Wednesday, August 27th, 2014

sleepoverGrandma Hattie and Grandpa Dooley were taking their granddaughter, Nellie, to a family wedding a few hours from home. Nellie was to be a flower girl in the wedding. Willie, Nellie’s brother didn’t want to go. Grandma Maureen offered to have a sleepover at her house. Her grandson, Bobby, one of Willie’s friends, was staying with her overnight. She thought Bobby would enjoy the company.

When Willie heard the news, he was thrilled! His very first sleepover! He and Bobby got on the phone and began making plans as to how they would spend the evening and the next day, until Grandma Hattie came to pick him up.

Willie ran upstairs and packed an overnight bag with computer games. Grandpa Dooley came in his room and asked, “What do you have in the bag, Willie?” Willie opened the bag and showed him. Grandpa chuckled and said, “You might want to add a change of clothes for tomorrow and don’t forget clean underwear; you know how Grandma Hattie feels about clean underwear!

Willie nodded and added a clean shirt pants, sock and clean underwear. Then he began to zip the bag closed. “Not so fast, Willie,” said grandpa. “What about a tooth brush, tooth paste, pajamas and slippers?”

Willie let out a big sigh and went about adding the things grandpa told him he needed. “ Boy,” said Willie, “seems like a lot of stuff just for just one sleepover!”

sleepoverWhen Willie was finished packing, he ran down the stairs. He was ready to go. Then he noticed grandma and grandpa were sitting in the living room. They didn’t even have their coats on!

“Come in here, Willie,” said grandma, “there is something I need to talk with you about.” Uh Oh thought Willie, what now?

“We need to talk about sleepover manners,” said grandma. “What’s that,” answered Willie. Grandma smiled and said, “When you are a guest in someone’s home, you need to behave in certain ways.”  “Like what,”  asked Willie.

Grandma began, “Here is a list of things you need to do. Let’s go over it together.

1 As soon as you get to Grandma Maureen’s say hello to her, and thank her for having you as a guest.

2. Give her this box of cookies I made for her.

3. Remember to say please, thank you, no thank you and excuse me.

4 Before you open the frig or go in a room or turn on the TV, be sure to ask permission.

5. Clean up after yourself . Ask if you can help clean off the table. Return everything you use to where you found it.”

“Wow, that is a lot to remember,” said Willie.

“Well if you want to be invited back you need to be a good guest, said grandma. Grandpa is ready to drive you to Grandma Maureen’s . So, give me a big kiss. Remember to mind your manners and have a great time!”

The next day, when grandpa picked Willie up, Grandma Maureen was heard to say,”Willie is welcome for a sleepover anytime. He was the best behaved sleepover guest!”

Goodbye Camp Until Next Year

Friday, August 15th, 2014

The last day of camp was sunny and warm, not hot, just right. It was a perfect day for end-of-camp events.

There were sack races and three-legged races the first thing in the morning. Then it was time to enjoy the outdoor pool, one last time, as campers.

The camp lunch was a picnic on the lawn behind the recreation center. The picnic was a present from Grandpa John’s market of sandwiches, bottles of  juice and low-fat ice-cream sandwiches.

After lunch, all the campers assembled in the recreation center auditorium for a play and closing ceremonies for the camp.

Some of the “Can Do” Kids put on a play about the fun things at camp. Then Miss Sue, the Director, got up and spoke about all the good things that were accomplished at camp.

Miss Sue gave out certificates to The “Can Do” Chefs Club for the great smoothies they made for the campers. All the kids in Miss Hattie’s crafts class got a certificate for making the best decoration for the new path …footprint stones!

Then it was time for the closing circle. The “Can Dos” sang the camp song. The girls hugged, the boys shook hands. Then it was over. No more camp until next year. Kind of a sad moment, but filled with the promise of all being together next year.

There was still a week before school started after camp ended. There was still time to play with friends, that is if the moms didn’t have lots of things scheduled for them to do before school started.

Then it’s off to school to learn new things and make new friends!

Just for Fun…Mazes

Thursday, July 10th, 2014

Another rainy day at summer camp. The “Can Dos” were getting bored with indoor games and activities. Miss Sue, the camp director,  thought…time for a contest!

Miss Sue distributed mazes to each of the kids at camp, announcing that the first one to finish the mazes correctly would win a prize…free admission to the Friday night movie, popcorn and a soft drink. You could have heard a pibn drop as the “Can Dos” worked hard at solving the mazes.

Here are two of the mazes…let’s see how you do.

Joining a Spring Sports Team

Sunday, May 4th, 2014

So, it is spring, and many local leagues are starting up. Joining a softball, baseball, or soccer team are all possibilities for the “Can Do” Kids.

 Hey Coach!

team Hey there guys, how are you? What’s going on?

Not much, glad it is finally getting a little warmer. We can go outside more.

That is a good thing, to get out there and let the wind blow through you, move around some more. I see the local leagues are getting ready to start up. How many of you are going to be on a team this spring?

Hands go up...

Hey Coach, did you play on any teams growing up?

I sure did. I played football since I was about 8 years old.

I bet you scored a lot of touchdowns, right?

Well, I never scored a single touchdown.

What? Huh? Why not?

Well, I didn’t run with the football, or throw it, or catch it.

 Then what did you do?

I blocked. I was an offensive lineman, and it was my job to make sure the guy across from me did not make the tackle. I had to stop him from getting to the quarterback, the running back, whatever, to take him out of the play so we could score.

So you played football, but you never actually had the football?

That’s right. I did have a very important job though, and if I did not do my job, then the guys with the football could never score a touchdown.

You see, I was part of a TEAM. I had a job to do, it was very important, and if I did it well, then the TEAM could score, and had a chance to win.

That is what a TEAM is all about, everyone doing their job so everyone can win together. After all, there is no “I” in TEAM.

Wow, it’s kind of like the soccer team I signed up for. The coach has me playing defense, so I won’t ever to a chance to score a goal.

Well, someone has to play defense, and if the other team never scores, doesn’t that give your team a better chance to win?

Yeah, but I want to score goals.

I know, I do. Everyone wants to be the hero and score the winning goal, or touchdown, or 2 points…but, there are different kinds of heroes, and all of them are important. If you block 8 shots during a game, isn’t that kind of like you taking away 8 goals from the other team? Isn’t that sorta like being a hero eight times?

I guess. I mean, it’s not like my team could score that many goals. So yeah, I guess it is important that I block the shots.

It is. Believe me, the people who are watching the game, the ones who really know the game, they will see what you are doing and recognize how good you are because you did it. So, you can be an excellent soccer player and never score a goal.

Wow, yeah…that makes sense.

Now, on other team sports, like baseball and softball, no matter what position you play, you will get a chance to hit the ball and maybe score. But, you will have to play a position, and some positions get more action than others. So it is a bit more of a mixed opportunity than say soccer, and football.

What about sports that are more just about “me”?

Well, cross-country running, track, wrestling….those are all very individual focused sports, but there can still be a team aspect. But, unlike other sports, you can be an excellent wrestler, or runner, and be on a weak team. So there is an advantage there, unlike say, football, where you can be a great football player, but be on a weak team and lose every game.

Did you do any of those sports?

I wrestled. Unlike football, when I wrestled, there was no one else to watch. You stand on that wrestling mat alone, just you and the other guy. That is both a little bit scary, and great, at the same time.

 Whaddy’a mean?

Well, on a team, if the team loses…you could blame the team. In wrestling, if you lose, well…it was ALL you. But, if you win, that was all you too. So, you have to take the good with the bad, there is no place to hide. Same for running. If you come in last, well…everyone is going to see that.

So, I guess it really is up to us what kind us sports we should do, huh?

Well, yeah. I would say you should try many different sports, see for yourself what you like and do not like. You may be good at something that right now you don’t think you would be any good at, but you never know.

For some, a team sport is the way to go, for others, well, not so much. The important thing is to get out there, give them a try, and be a good team mate, player, and student of the sport.
