Why Does Willie Almost Always Win at Checkers?

There was a checkers contest at the community center and Willie beat everyone who played against him!

How did he beat every one of his friends at checkers? When asked by a group of the “Can Dos” who lost to him, Willie told them that he played checkers often. That is why he is so good at it. Well, just as he was saying that, Grandpa Dooley walked by and heard what he said.

“Willie,” said Grandpa Dooley, “Why don’t you share how you really got so good at playing checkers”? “Oh, do I have to,” said Willie. ” No,” said Grandpa Dooley, “but it would be the fair thing to do.”

“Okay, ” said Willie, “Grandpa Dooley found me a computer game that lets me practice checkers any time I want to. I play against the computer and that can be tricky.”

The “Can Dos” all asked him to show them the game. Grandpa Dooley offered to install the game on the computers at the community center if Miss Sue agreed it was okay to do.

Why don’t you take a look at the game with the “Can Dos”? Why not play a game or so?

Would you have Wanted to be a Pilgrim Child?

Pilgrim children were busy.

They did not have as much time as we do today to read or play games. Even young Pilgrim children were needed to work their parents farms, hunt, fish and participate in the every day life of their community.

Religious activities, school and helping around the house with daily living activities also took a part of their time each week.

During what little free time they had, Pilgrim children were allowed to play games.

They probably played games with each other and their new friends, the Native America children on Thanksgiving Day. They may have played a game called naughts and crosses, that we know as tic, tac, toe, and a game they called draughts that we know as checkers.

Pilgrim children may also played other games such as ball games, shooting marbles and a game similar to hide and seek, called blind man’s bluff.

One thing is for sure…Pilgrim children had to make up games since there were few toys to play with back then and it would be hundred of years before, radio, TV and computers games were invented!

Big Doings for the 4th of July

The “Can Do” Kids can’t wait for the 4th of July celebrations at the “Can Do” Street Community Center.

They love birthday parties and the 4th of July is the biggest birthday party of all…our country’s birthday!

This year, there is so much more they could participate in for the 4th of July, now that they were a year older.

Weeks ago the “Can Dos” signed up for the various events at the Center. At the planning meeting, they found out the big event on the 4th of July would be a short play about the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Even though the original signers of the first Declaration of Independence were all men, the girls were given the opportunity to dress in male costumes, if they wanted to be in the play. Annie, Maria and Nellie signed up to be part of the play along with 10 boys to make up the needed 13 signers, one for each of the 13 colonies.

Kathy, Yundi, Hector and Eulyn signed up, as members of the “Can Do” Kids Chefs Club, to work with the senior’s club members to make red white and blue desserts to serve with the barbeque supper after the play.

Jay, Orrie, Mickey, Arthur J. Bobby, Wendy and Willie volunteered to be the chorus singing well-known patriotic songs to open and close the play.

After the barbeque, after the sunset, would come the fireworks. The “Can Dos” could watch the fireworks, they couldn’t participate in the fireworks. That’s a job for experienced adults, not kids. Kids could get hurt by fireworks.

4th of July is going to be quite a day… NOW IF ONLY IT DOESN’T RAIN!

The “Can Dos” came back from Memorial Day weekend with their heads full of what they want to do come summer vacation.

Miss Pat knew they would.

The “Can Dos” are not fond of the times tables.

Since Miss Pat knows they are important, she made up two games using the times tables for the class to play.

Why not play along?

Just go to the “Can Do”Club House, choose games and them choose the games called x+1.

Joining a Team for the 1st Time

In this story, Coach Campbell helps Bobby overcome his concerns about joining a team for the first time.

Hey Coach!

Hey there Bobby. What’s up? How ya’ doing?

Oh, not much…but, well, you know how you were talking to us last week about joining a team?

Sure do!

Well, there is a team I want to join, but I am kinda’ nervous about it.

Well, that is totally understandable.

It is?

Sure it is. I mean, you have never been on a team before. So many new things to deal with, like meeting new kids, new adults, going to practices, the list goes on. But, none of these things are too big for you to handle. In fact, you have already done these things before.

I have?

Yes, you have. Maybe you don’t remember your first time here at the Can Do Rec Center, but I sure do. You were a real wall-flower. You came in, quiet as a church mouse, not getting too far from the nearest wall, and just watching everything with real big eyes. I could tell you were a bit nervous, but that didn’t stop you from coming in, and taking a look around.

Oh yeah, I remember. Yeah, I was nervous. Everyone knew everybody, and you were pretty scary. Biggest person I ever saw up close.

Coach Campbell laughs….

Yeah, well…look at you now. You walk around this place like you own it. You know everybody, everybody knows you, and you are so over being nervous around me! If you could do it then, you can do it now. Now, here are some tips to help you out. First, be sure to listen to your coach. Be coachable.

Coachable?

Yeah, that means being able to listen to your coaches, and try your hardest to do what they are trying to teach you, the way they are teaching you to do it. It is probably the most important key to being successful on a team. Believe me, I am a coach a long time now, and there is nothing I like better than a kid who listens and works hard.

What if I am not that good at what they want me to do?

Don’t worry; most kids aren’t very good at first. Yeah, there will be some kids that are better than you right now, but don’t let that discourage you. You just keep doing the work, and you will get there. The coaches will recognize that effort, and appreciate it. I say it all the time as a coach, hard work beats talent that doesn’t work. It will take some time, but it is true. Hard work is what it takes to get better.

OK, but what if I don’t make any friends?

Oh, I am not worried about that, not at all. You will make friends, just like you did here. Don’t get me wrong, you may not become friends with every kid on the team. Heck, you might not even like every kid on the team. But, you don’t have to. You will make friends though, and I bet you some of them will be your friends for a real long time.

Remember, you are not the only one that is a bit nervous, and wants to make friends. In the time before, and after practice, you will get to know some kids. You will get to talking, and well, before you know it, you have some new friends.

So, you gonna’ go out for that team?

YEAH! I am going to go there today.
