The Right Way to Get Attention in Class

Friday, September 29th, 2017

attentionMaria and Eulyn were always yelling out answers to get attention in homeroom and in computer class. So, Miss Pat decided to review the right way to get attention in class.

Miss Pat asked the class what was their favorite breakfast. All of a sudden it wasn’t just Maria and Eulyn that were yelling out answers; Bobby, Jay, Willie and Kathy also were yelling out as well! There was so much noise that Miss Pat couldn’t hear what anyone was saying,

“OK, quiet down children,” said Miss Pat. “That really didn’t work did it?” That is why in class, when we want to ask a question or answer a question or get the teacher’s attention for other reasons, we must first raise our hand. Then when the teacher sees your hand up she will point to you or call your name or both. Then you can speak.”

Them Miss Pat asked the question again, just to see what the class would do. “What is your favorite breakfast food? Eulyn attentionstarted to shout out, but caught herself and raised her hand. The rest of the class all raised their hands.

“Good job,” said Miss Pat.”That’s the right way to get attention in class.” Then she called on Eulyn to hear about Eulyn’s favorite breakfast. Then she gave everyone in class the chance to talk about their favorite breakfasts.

Guess what was the most popular breakfast….toast and jam and chocolate milk!

Remember boys and girls there is a right way and a wrong way to get attention.

Santa Questions

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2015

On the last day of school before santaChristmas recess, the “Can Dos”are having a hard time paying attention in class. All they can  think about is the long vacation ahead and, of course, Santa.

While most of the “Can Dos” are going to be home on Christmas day, some of them are  going to be spending the holidays with family who live far away.

Hector is worried that Santa won’t know where to bring his gifts on Christmas Eve. He is going to spend Christmas at his grandma’s in Puerto Rico.

Jay has the same worry. Will Santa know to come to the Indian reservation where he is visiting his grandparents?

Annie is afraid Santa won’t bring her the new basketball she wants. She hasn’t been doing her best in school the past few months. Lately, her mom is always having to remind her to put her toys away. Annie is not sure if Santa always knows when children are naughty or nice.

Eulyn isn’t sure if Santa got the letter she wrote him last month. She just has to get the two-wheel bike she wrote him about.

Bobby is hoping that Santa will bring a gift for his mom. He didn’t save up to buy her anything, so when Bobby visited Santa at the mall, he asked Santa to bring a gift for his mom that he could say was from him. Santa didn’t say yes. He said we’ll see. What does that mean?

What do you think boys and girls? Will Santa find Hector and Jay on Christmas Eve, even if they are not in their own homes?

Does Annie have anything to worry about?

Does Santa bring gifts for adults, or just for children? Does Bobby need to make his mom a gift?

A Chocolate Bunny for the Winner of the Easter Egg Hunt

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

bunnyOn Sunday afternoon, the “Can Do” kids all gathered at the “Can Do” Street Community Center for the annual egg hunt, and the awarding of the chocolate bunny for the most eggs collected.

With the blowing of a whistle, the “Can Dos” all set out to find the colored eggs hidden in the field behind the community center. They all carried baskets to hold the eggs they found. There was to be a prize for the most eggs found. The prize…a huge chocolate bunny that was the exact image of what the Easter Bunny was thought to look like.

There was so much excitement! The “Can Dos” were running and looking all over the place! Soon there were no more eggs to be found and the “Can Dos” carried their baskets into the recreation room to join their parents for refreshments and the awarding of the prize for most eggs. Members of the Seniors club served individual bunny cakes and orange-flavored bunny punch. Everyone pretended the bunny punch was carrot juice since rabbits love carrots!

After refreshments, it was time to award the prize for most colored eggs. Miss Hattie came to the microphone. She said, “Before I award this chocolate bunny, the one that looks exactly like the Easter Bunny, can anyone tell me where the Easter Bunny comes from and what does he have to do with colored eggs?”

Silence fell over the room. The “Can Dos” just wanted to know who won. The suspense was too much! Hector couldn’t help wishing that somebody would tell Miss Hattie what she wanted to hear so she would get on with awarding the chocolate Easter Bunny.

Just then, Orrie raised his hand. Now, the truth be told, most of the time, some of the “Can Dos” got annoyed with Orrie for always having the answer. But this time, a cheer went up from the “Can Dos” when Orrie raised his hand. Hector mumbled under his breath, “Get it right, Orrie, or we’ll be here all afternoon!”

Orrie cleared his throat and began talking. “Long ago, thousands of years ago during pagan times, there were special things to do to welcome spring. The rabbit and eggs were symbols at these spring celebrations. In the 1600’s Germans began to write about a rabbit they called Oschter Haws. He was a rabbit that was believed to have the ability to lay colored eggs that were given as gifts to good children.

When German immigrants came to America they brought this custom with them. It was celebrated on Easter. When it was time for the boys and girls to gather the colored eggs, the boys used their caps and the girls, their bonnets. Over the years, Easter baskets took the place of hats.”

Orrie stopped talking and the room broke into applause. Orrie’s family beamed with pride at their smart boy!

Well, the eggs were counted and the winner announced. Eulyn collected the most eggs…fifty-six to be exact. Miss Hattie handed her the bunny. Why it was almost as big as she was!

Then Eulyn did a really special thing. She walked over to the “Can Do” Kids table and invited each “Can Do” to break off and eat a piece of the chocolate Easter Bunny. Now that’s a girl who knows how to share!

Some of the “Can Do” Kids Take a Writing Class

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Wendy FrontWendy is the “Can Do Kid who loves to write. She writes every day. That is why Wendy is so good at writing.

Most of the other “Can Do” Kids do well with writing but…Bobby, Eulyn, Maria and Yundi, Wendy’s brother, need to get better at writing. When the community center announced that there would be a beginner writing class for young kids, in the early grades of elementary school, their moms enrolled them in the class.

Maria and Eulyn were willing to go every Saturday morning for 4 weeks. They knew they needed help with writing.

However, Bobby and Yundi were really unhappy about having to take the class. After all, it was baseball season, and they were on the team. How would the team get along without them?

Eulyn, Maria, Yundi and Bobby were thrilled to discover that their teacher was Miss Pat! Miss Pat was concerned that the “Can Dos” were having problems with identifying the main idea in stories. So she started the class with the following story to help them recognize the main idea . Read the story and see if you can pick out the main idea of the story

The Story:

Mark trys to be friendes with Jim, the new boi in school. First, Mark smils at Jim in the lunch room. Mark has a dog. Mark plaes with Jim after lunch.. Finalliy, he shares a seat with Jim on the school bus.

When the  “Can Dos” finished picking out the main idea of the story, Miss Pat gave them directions for doing other things with the story. Just follow the directions and correct the errors in each sentence.

Directions:

Underline sentences that have details that say more about the main idea.

Cross out the sentence that does not belong to the main idea.

Circle the words that are misspelled or need to begin with a capital letter.

Why not get busy writing an ending for the story?

Be sure and have your parent or older brother or sister check your work to see how you did.

Have fun!

Showing Up for Annie

Monday, July 9th, 2012

AnnieThe basketball traveling team tryouts were yesterday. Annie wanted to be on the team more than anything else she wanted to do all summer.

Annie had been practicing for weeks in the hopes of making the “Can Do” Street traveling team.

Anyone who knows Annie, knows that you never see her without out a basketball. If she is not shooting hoops, she is twirling her basketball on one finger.

Annie would rather play basketball than eat ice cream!

Tryouts were scheduled for 3PM following the end of the camp day.  Earlier in the day, over lunch, Kathy, Nellie, Eulyn and Maria were talking about attending the tryouts and cheering Annie on.

When Willie, Hector and Bobby sat down at their table, Kathy asked them if they were going to show up for Annie and cheer her on. Hector answered, ” Aw, she’s good, she doesn’t need me to cheer her on, besides I’ve got a play date with my cousin. We are going skateboarding in the park.”

Willie chimed in, “Yeah she’s a sure pick for the traveling team. I’m going home after camp, I’m tired.” Bobby said,” I’ll be there for Annie. Whenever I played a team sport, Annie showed up for me.

Kathy glared at Hector and said,”Annie was in the stands cheering for you when you were in the skate board races.” Then Kathy spun around and faced Willie saying, “Willie, Annie attended everyone of your baseball games this spring and you’re not going to show up for her? What kind of a friend are you, anyway?

Hector and Willie looked embarrassed. They both agreed to be there for Annie that afternoon.

Well, no surprise, Annie made the traveling team!

Afterwards, when her friends were congratulating Annie, she said,”Thanks guys, for showing up for me. When I walked out and saw you all in the stands, it really made me want to do my very best.”

Her friends smiled and nodded and then Annie gave the “Can Do” Kids shout out, “Can Do” Kids show up for each other and we are “Can Do” Kids!”
