What Can I Make With…

Monday, May 25th, 2015

makeOn the bus ride home from a class trip to a working farm and farmer’s market, Miss Pat challenged the “Can Do”Kids with a game of what can I make with what I saw at the farmer’s market.

Miss Pat said, “Okay, who is going to go first?

Bobby raised his hand and said, “I saw apples and  I can make applesauce with apples.”

Kathy went next saying she saw peaches and she can make a peach pie with her mom’s help.

Hector shared that he saw cherries and he could make an ice cream sundae with a cherry on top.

Eulyn saw celery and she knows she can make a tuna salad with cut up celery in it.

Willie saw tomatoes and he can make a salad with them.

Now it is your turn. Name one thing you make with the following things that the “Can Do” Kids saw at the farmer’s market?

eggs                         milk

butter                    cheese

strawberries       blueberries

potatoes               corn

Where is the State of ______ and What’s the Capital?

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Miss Pat was really disappointed to see how poorly a number of the “Can Do kids”  did on the US map quiz. Most didn’t know where over half the states were on the map, and even less could name the capital of each state.

Miss Pat announced, “It is time to spend some time, each day, on the computer playing the US Jigsaw Game to learn where each state is and what city is its capital.”

At first, the class wasn’t too keen on the idea, but once they got started with the jigsaw puzzle, they liked it. Each day, Miss Pat would have a pop quiz following their using the jigsaw game and she and the “Can Dos” were pleased to see how many states they were getting to know.

Why not see how you can do finding each state in the USA.

Just go to the “Can Do” Street club house, choose the balloon that say More Games, then choose USA Jigsaw.

Good luck finding each state and its capital!

The History of Mother’s Day

Wednesday, May 6th, 2015

Grandpa John walked into the kitchen while some of Orrie’s friends were having a snack; he was just in time to here Hector say, “Where did the idea for Mother’s Day come from? Orrie looked at Willie, Willie looked at Bobby and then they all looked at Grandpa John.

Grandpa John pulled up a chair, sat down and said, “Okay, this is what I know about Mother’s Day:

In seventeenth century England, Mothering Sunday was celebrated each year on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 days of fasting before Easter). Christians honored the church in which they were baptized, known as their Mother Church. Mothering Sunday soon began to honor human mothers, too. British servants and employees, who worked far from home, received time off to visit their moms and share a family meal.

American colonists didn’t adopt the tradition of Mother’s Day, possibly because they were busy trying to survive in their new homes.

The idea of celebrating Mother’s Day in the U.S. began with Julia Ward Howe, who became famous during the Civil War as the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Howe thought wars were a waste of young men’s lives, and she called on mothers to protest the killing of their children in wars.

In her Mother’s Day Proclamation, Howe wrote, “We women of one country will be too tender to those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”  In the 1870s, women’s groups in over a dozen American cities observed Howe’s holiday, Mother’s Day, but the idea didn’t really catch on until the following century.

In 1908, Anna M. Jarvis campaigned for an official Mother’s Day in memory of her own mother, an activist and social worker who hoped that the contributions of mothers would someday be recognized. Anna Jarvis was determined to make her mother’s wish come true. She petitioned the superintendent of the church her mother had attended and on May 10, 1908, the first official Mother’s Day celebration took place at a church service in Grafton, West Virginia. Jarvis gave carnations—her mother’s favorite flower—to each mother at the service. Later Jarvis and her supporters lobbied for the creation of an official Mother’s Day. In 1914 her dream came true when President Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.”

Grandpa John smiled and said,”That’s why every May we celebrate Mother’s Day by doing something special for our mothers. I hope you boys have something special planned for your moms and grandmas for this coming Mother’s Day!”

The Steps to Good Personal Hygiene

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

At the last parent-teacher meeting some of the parents asked Miss Pat if there was a computer game that could help their children practice the steps of good personal hygiene.

It seems that some of the “Can Dos” were having trouble with the steps for wash their hands and keeping themselves clean.

Miss Pat decided to make up a game, two of them to be exact.

The first game reminded the “Can Dos” of the correct steps to hand washing. The second game Miss Pat made reminded the “Can Dos” of the steps to washing and grooming.

Well, at first the “Can Dos” couldn’t see the need for the games as they all thought they knew the steps of hand washing a personal grooming. Wow, were they surprised when they didn’t do so well in the two games.

Let’s see how well you do with the “Steps” games.

Just go to the “Can Do” Club House, go to games and choose Steps.

A Kitten is Cute; A Kitten is Work

Saturday, April 18th, 2015

kittenWhen Bobby rang the bell, Arthur J’s mom answered saying,”Sorry Bobby, said Arthur J’s mom, “Arthur J just got that kitten he wanted and now he needs to stay in and spend today learning how to care for the kitten.”

Bobby wanted to know if it was a big job to take care of a kitten, since he wanted a kitten, but his mom wasn’t sure he was old enough to take care of a pet. “Why don’t you come in and see for yourself,” said Arthur J’s mom.

Arthur J was setting up the litter box in the basement when Bobby walked in and asked, “What’s the kitten’s kittenname?” Arthur J held up the kitten and said,”Meet Bubbles.”

“Boy, do I ever want a kitten,” said Bobby. “Well, before you go getting one you need to know a few things that might change your mind,” said Arthur. “All pets are work and my mom said if I want a pet, I have to take care of it.”

Bobby thought a moment and said, “Well at least with a cat you don’t have to walk it, no matter what the weather.” Arthur J said, “Look what I’m doing. I’m filling a litter box with kitty litter so my kitten can go to the bathroom. I have to empty this litter regularly and throw it away and make sure my kitten has fresh kitty litter.”

Arthur’s mom came in a said, “Pets are wonderful, but they are work. Bobby, before you get a kitten think about the following:

  • There are things you need to buy  such as a litter box, cat carrier, food and water bowls, a collar and tags, and several toys.
  • You need to cat-proof your house before kitty arrives and pick up anything small  she could swallow.
  • Kittens need to eat 3x the calories as adult cats. So, you need to buy and feed her food that is especially for kittens.
  • You need to keep lots of fresh water, in clean bowls, around the house for your kitten
  • You need  to place the litter box in a quiet, out of the way place and show your kitten where it is. Make sure the sides of the litter box are low enough for her to get into the litter box while still a little kitten.
  • You need to play with your kitten every day so she learns people skills and is a good pet.
  • It’s important to provide scratching posts around the house so kitty doesn’t ruin furniture or drapes with her scratching.
  • Kitty needs to see the doctor just like you do. Her doctor, a veterinarian, will keep up her vaccinations and keep her safe from ringworm and fleas.  These visits can be expensive, so you need to be sure the family budget can allow for doctor visits for a kitten.”

Bobby looked thoughtful for a minute and then said, “Wow, I had no idea so much went into caring for a kitten! I have to think about this more and talk more about  getting a kitten with my mom.”
