Willie Wants a Dog

September 13th, 2010

Grandma Hattie and Grandpa Dooley know Willie misses his mom whose away in the Army but they are not so sure that getting him a dog is the best thing to do. They are busy taking care of him and Nellie, his sister, and don’t have the time or the energy to be picking up after a dog.

Willie promises to take care of a dog, but he has never had one before and really doesn’t know all he will have to do to take care of a dog. Do you? Can you circle all the things Willie will have to do to take care of a dog?

Take the dog for a walk 2-3 times a day (with a puppy even more times)

Put food out and clean up if the dog makes a mess

Make sure the dog always has water in his/ her bowl

Brush  the dog each week

Clean up after the dog if she/ he has a bathroom accident

Come home from a play date on time to walk the dog

Get up early every day to walk the dog

Can you think of anything else Willie will need to do?

What Can I Do To Take Care of Myself?

September 9th, 2010

Each year you get bigger and stronger and need less and less help to take care of yourself.  Circle the things you can do now, without help,  to take care of yourself.

Wash myself when taking a bath

wash my hair

brush my teeth

brush and comb my hair

go to the bathroom by myself

get dressed

tie my shoes

make my bed

pack my schoolbag

pour  a glass of milk  or water

make a sandwich

fix a snack

Wow, there’s lots to do…but you are a “Can Do” Kid and pretty soon you will be able to do all of these things to take care of yourself.

Do I Have To?

September 7th, 2010

You have finished your homework and got your things ready for school for the next day. Dinner is over and there is a really fun show on TV that you want to see. Then mom says, “Time to take your bath and get ready for bed.”  Then you say, “Why do I have to take a bath? I’m not dirty.”

Circle what you can you say to make mom change her mind about bath time.

1.I’ll take my bath as soon as the show is over.

2. Please mom, can I  just see my show and then I will take my bath?

3. Mom, I promise to take a quick bath and go right to bed  if I can just see my show.

Why did you choose the answer you did?

Ask your mom the answer she would most like to hear.

What’s Best to Drink?

September 2nd, 2010

The “Can Do” Kids learned from Nurse Diane that there are two drinks that are best for them and they should drink them most often.  What two drinks they do you think they are?

Milk and water                                      Water and juice

Milk and milk shakes                          Water and diet soda

Why do we need to drink milk?

Why do we need to drink water?

When is it okay to have soda?

Is it a good idea  to have a milk shake every day?

Most of the “Can Do” Kids are Physically Fit…How About You?

August 31st, 2010

Annie plays basketball and  Hector skateboards. Jay is a pro at ping pong and Nellie and Kathy jump rope. Yundi and Wendy ride bikes. Maria walks a mile every day.  Willie and Jay play baseball in the warm weather and ice skate in winter. Orrie uses a wheelchair but that doesn’t stop him from being physically fit. He swims and  plays wheelchair basketball.

What do you do to stay physically fit?

On “Can Do” Street the kids limit their time watching TV and playing video and computer games to one hour a day. They play outdoors when the weather is nice for about an hour after school and a couple of hours each day on the weekend. They do their homework before they watch TV or use the computer. They also have time for chores like setting the table or emptying the trash, or feeding a pet. Playing nicely with a brother or sister is also something they do.

How do you spend your time after school and on weekends?

To be physically fit you need to be active. SO…be a “Can Do” Kid…figure out what activity you like and then go do it!
