The 5Ws and 1H of a Bath for Scooter

the 5Ws and 1HMiss Pat called the class to order and said, “Everyone take out his or her copy of Arthur J’s story, ‘A Bath for Scooter’ and let’s review the 5Ws and 1H of the story.”

Hector looked confused. “Miss Pat,” said Hector, “Please remind me what the 5Ws and 1H are.”

Miss Pat smiled and said, “Every story usually answers the following questions:

What happens in the story?

Who does it happen to?

Why does it happen?

When does it happen?

Where does it happen?

and

How does it happen?

“Hmmm,” said Hector as he picked up his pencil and began to read Arthur’s story again.

The class grew quiet as each “Can Do” made a list of the 5Ws and 1H. Then each “Can Do” wrote the answers after each one of the 5Ws and 1H.

Okay, ready for the answers to the 5Ws and 1H?

What is the story about? A bath

Who does it happen to? Scooter

Why does it happen? Scooter got in the trash and got sticky

When does it happen? Yesterday

Where does it happen? The bath happens in the bathroom sink

How does the bath happen?  Bobby puts him in the sink and washes him with soap and water

Boys and girls reading this..how did you do with the 5Ws and 1H?

Writing: Storytelling on Paper

Miss Pat said, “Most of you need help with writing. You need to practice writing if you are going to get good at it. CSo…for the next few days, you are each going to tell me a story and then you are going to write your story down on paper”

The “Can Dos” started to find reasons why Teacher Pat’s idea was not a good idea; all except Wendy, that is. Wendy loves writing and she thought Miss Pat’s idea was just great!

Willie asked,”Why do we have to do this?” Teacher Pat smiled and answered, “Why, because writing is telling a story on page.”

With that, Teacher Pat took out a picture and posted it where everyone could see.Then she said, “What is going on in this picture is what you are going to make up a story about that you can use in your writing assignment.”

writing“Remember when telling a story, or writing a story,” said Teacher Pat,”a good story answer’s the 5 Ws and 1H questions.”

Hector asked what everyone was thinking when he said,” What are they?”

Miss Pat answered, “In this case, the 5Ws questions are…what is happening, who is happening to,  where is it happening, why is it happening and when is it happening? As far as the 1H …how is it happening?”

Teacher Pat gave the class an hour to make up a story that contained the 5Ws and the 1H. Then she told them that she would begin to call on them to share their stories in class the next day. When everyone had a chance to share his or her story, then it would be time for each one of them to write a story using the correct grammar an punctuation and turn it in for a grade. The best story would be put up on the bulletin board outside the principal’s office for all to see.

Okay, why don’t you make up a story along with the “Can Dos”? Remember to name  the puppy and give your story a title.

The Main Idea

ideaMiss Pat was concerned that the “Can Dos” were having problems with identifying the main idea in stories. Here is a story she gave the “Can Dos” to help them recognize the main idea.

She also asked them to find misspelled word or words that need to be capitalized. Why not try the activity and see how well you do?

The story:

Mark trys to be friendes with Jim, the new boi in school. First, Mark smiles at Jim in the lunch room. Mark has a dog. Then, he plays with Jim after lunch. Finally, he shares a seat with Jim on the school bus.

By the end of the day…

Directions:

Put a star(*) next to the sentence in the beginning that tells the main idea.

Underline sentences in the middle that have details that say more about the main idea.

Cross out the sentence in the middle that does not belong to the main idea.

Circle the words that are misspelled or need to begin with a capital letter.

Write an ending for the end of the story.

Be sure and have your parent or older brother or sister check your work to see how you did.

Writing About Time

Time of DayWendy loves to write about time. Miss Pat thought about stories that would help the “Can Dos” understand more about sentences that describe writing about time. She asked Wendy to write two of them to be read in class.

Here are a few stories that Wendy wrote about time. Why not see how well you can figure out the times they are talking about. Remember, time is more than a time of day. It can be a time of the year, a time in history, a time in the future, a season of the year, and a holiday time.

Story 1 about time: It was getting dark. Snowflakes were falling on my nose. I put my hood up over my head. I looked at a clock in the store window. In fifteen minutes it would be suppertime.

Questions:

What time of day is it?________________________________________

What season of the year is it?___________________________________

What is the weather like ?______________________________________

Story 2 about time: Hector, Bobby and Willie went camping with their grandpas. The campsite was really cool. There were lots of big leafy trees. The lake was so close we could see it from our tents. We used branches and twigs on the ground for our campfire. The night was so dark, we could see so many stars in the sky. It was fun out there.
