Homophones Matching Games

homophonesMiss Pat was getting ready to teach the class about homophones, those words that sound alike, but have different meanings and different spellings.

She asked the class, “Can anyone tell me what homophones are?” The whole class stared at her with blank looks on their faces. Even Orrie was stumped!

Miss Pat continued, “Can anyone tell me what homonyms are?” Orrie’s hand went up like a shot. When called on, he answered, “Homonyms are words that sound alike but have different meanings.” Miss Pat smiled and said, “Very good, Orrie.

Homophones are a type of homonyms that also sound alike and have different meanings, but they also have different spellings.”

“Huh,” said Hector, ” Can you give us a few examples of homophones?” The class nodded their agreement.

“Okay,” said Miss Pat here are two examples of homophones. I will even use them in a sentence.

Witch and Which

I am going to be a witch on Halloween.

Which one of you wants to write on the blackboard?

Break and Brake

Don’t break that glass, or you will have to pay for it.

Is the brake on your bike working properly?”

Miss Pat waited for her examples to sink in and then she announced, “Now we are going to play some computer matching games that use homophones. Be sure to pay close attention as tomorrow  I will give you a quiz on some of the homophones you match today.”

Then Miss Pat had the class go to their computers and play the Words that sound alike games.

Time for Word Jumble!

Well, the daily new vocabulary words were taking longer to learn. Miss Pat knew she had to come up with something special at the end of every vocabulary session to reward the “Can Do” kids for their hard work.

Since they love word jumbles she decided to give them a word jumble every time they did well.

Here is one they got after a pop spelling quiz.

The “Can Do” Chefs Club Does Asian for International Day

The “Can Do” Chefs Club received an invitation from Miss Sue to make  lunch for the kindergarteners on International Day at the “Can Do” Street Community Center.

Miss Sue’s invitation read, “Please prepare a lunch that will be suitable for celebrating International Day.”

“Huh,” said Hector. “Wow, that’s hard, “said Nellie. Kathy just looked blank as she tried to think of something to make that would fit an International Day and that young kids would be willing to eat.

Then Yundi said,”I’ve got it,” said Yundi. “We make an Asian lunch. We serve sushi and teach the kids to use chopsticks.” The rest of the Chefs Club members just stared at him and Kathy said, “What little kid, that isn’t Asian, would eat raw fish?” everyone laughed, even Yundi.

Yundi said,”We won’t make sushi with fish. We’ll make peanut butter and jelly sushi rolls.” And that is just what they did!

Oh, the kindergarteners just loved it! Miss Sue was so pleased and all the parents were so impressed with what the “Can Do” Chefs Club members managed to do for International Day.

chefs clubRecipe: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sushi Rolls

  • Prep Time: 3 min
  • Cook Time: 0 min
  • Yield: 1 serving (8 pieces)

 Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons Jif® Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Smucker’s® Strawberry Jelly, or any Smucker’s® Jam, Jelly or Preserves of your choice
  • 2 slices bread

Directions:

  1. REMOVE crusts from bread. With a rolling pin or large soup can, completely flatten bread.
  2. SPREAD 1 tablespoon peanut butter and 1 tablespoon fruit spread on each slice of bread
  3. ROLL each slice into a tight spiral. Cut each spiral into 4 pieces.

Kathy Fell Asleep in Class…Again!

asleepAfter recess, Miss Pat noticed that Kathy had her head on the table and was sound asleep.

Her table mates were trying not to giggle, but Kathy was snoring so loudly it was hard to hear Miss Pat.

Miss Pat went over to Kathy and gently shook her awake. Kathy woke with a start. ” I was just resting my eyes,” said Kathy. Her classmates started laughing and Arthur J said, “You were snoring, Kathy.

You were asleep and you were really snoring!”

Kathy got mad and said,”Was not asleep; was not snoring!” The her classmates yelled out, “Were too snoring!” Hector even demonstrated how she sounded. Kathy’s face got beat red and her eyes got all watery. She was so embarrassed.

Miss Pat asked,”Kathy, why so tired?” Kathy answered, “The last time I fell asleep in class it was because I didn’t eat a good breakfast. But this morning I had eggs and toast and juice and that is a good breakfast.”

Miss Pat said,”What time did you go to bed last night?” Kathy answered, “I went to bed at my usual time but I couldn’t get to sleep for a long time.”

Orrie started waving his hand madly and saying, “I know, I know.” Miss Pat called on him saying, “What do you know, Orrie?”

“I think I know why Kathy couldn’t fall asleep last night. I saw her take a can of soda up to bed with her. It was the kind of soda that has caffeine in it. it also has lots of sugar.”

Miss Pat asked, “Is that true, Kathy?” Kathy nodded. Miss Pat said, ” Sugary drinks, especially those with caffeine can make you jumpy any time. If  you drink them but before bed, well, they can keep you up for hours!”

“What else shouldn’t we have before bed,” asked Miss Pat. Bobby said,” No eating candy.” Annie said, “Don’t take sugary cereals.”

Miss Pat smiled, “Got the idea Kathy? Ask your mom what you can have as a safe and healthy snack so you can get to sleep and stay asleep.”

The Firefighter is Our Friend

Vacation week was coming to an end and soon it would be time to go back to school. But, today there is a guest speaker at “Can Do” Street Community Center.

A firefighter is speaking  to the “Can Dos” about fire safety.

The “Can Dos” could not help staring at all the clothing and equipment the firefighter had on.

He was even carrying a mask, which he put on for them to see. He was kind of scary looking with the mask on. Then Firefighter Jim explained why he needed the mask for his safety when he went into a burning building to rescue people and it all made sense to the “Can Dos.

Firefighter Jim said to the class, “If you are ever in a building where there is a fire, don’t run or hide from the firefighter who comes in to rescue you. Don’t be afraid of the mask he has to wear in order to breathe safely while trying to find you or others who need to be carried to safety. When a firefighter calls out to you, answer right away so he can find you. It is very hard to see in the dark caused by a fire, so let him here your voice loud and clear.”

The “Can Dos” listened very carefully. It was scary to think about being in a fire and having to be rescued, but they wanted to know how to help themselves if ever there was a fire.

Then firefighter Jim reminded them of how to prevent causing a fire:

  • Never play with matches or cigarette lighters
  • Never play near a stove that has lit burners
  • Don’t throw anything into a fireplace while it is burning
  • Don’t play with lit candles
  • Don’t use or play with fire works
  • Don’t start a fire in your yard to burn trash or leaves…leave that to the adults to do.

Firefighter Jim reminded the “Can Dos” that if they saw a fire, not to try to put it out, but to get away from the fire, to safety He also reminded them that if the fire was in their home to get out immediately and not try to go and get a favorite toy or a pet to take out with them. Once they were safely away from the fire they could call 911 or pull a fire alarm box if there was one nearby.

Walking home from the Community Center, the “Can Dos” spoke about Firefighter Jim’s visit. What he said made sense to them. The all agreed that firefighters truly are their friends.
