Break out the swim suit, sunglasses, sandals and grill. Not only is summer peak season for backyard barbeques, it is also prime time for foodborne illnesses. Bacteria grow fast at warmer temperatures and can make you sick\u2014leaving you with not so good memories of your family barbeque this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Listeria monocytogenes <\/em>is a dangerous bacterium that you should be on the lookout for all year round\u2014especially in the summer months. <em>Listeria<\/em> can cause a foodborne illness called listeriosis. It can grow at refrigeration temperatures and is <a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm6222a4.htm?s_cid=mm6222a4_w\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">one of the deadliest foodborne<\/span> <span style=\"color: #993300;\">illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #993300;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Pregnant women are more likely to be affected by <em>Listeria<\/em> than healthy people. In fact, they are about <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/listeria\/risk.html\">10 times more likely than the general population<\/a><\/span> to get listeriosis. <em>Listeria<\/em> can be passed to your unborn baby, even when you show no sign of sickness. It can lead to premature delivery, miscarriage, stillbirth, and death in newborns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">During pregnancy, it is important to be aware of the foods you are eating. <em>Listeria<\/em> is commonly found in ready-to-eat foods. These foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Soft-ripened cheeses (traditional Mexican-style cheeses, Camembert, Brie, Feta, and Ricotta);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Raw vegetables;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Store-brought salads (ham, chicken, tuna, and seafood);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Deli meats; and,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Hot dogs (a barbeque favorite).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If these foods can\u2019t be reheated or cooked, pregnant women should avoid eating them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Hot dogs are a certainty at any barbeque. For this reason, it is important to keep <em>Listeria<\/em> from lurking in your hotdogs especially for pregnant guests, their unborn babies, and newborns. Here are a few tips to keep your grilled hot dogs in tip-top shape:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Never eat hotdogs straight out the package as a pre-BBQ snack\u2014hot dogs must always be heated to 165\u00b0F or higher before eaten.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Wash hands after handling hot dogs from the package.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Avoid getting hot dog juice from the package on other foods, utensils, or preparation surfaces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">After grilling hot dogs, keep the temperature at 140\u00b0F or higher until served.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Make sure leftover hot dogs are refrigerated or put on ice two hours after they are removed from the grill or one hour if the temperature is over 90\u00b0F.
