So, it is a good time to review your child\u2019s oral hygiene routine.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Unfortunately, tooth decay affects 50 percent of first-graders and 80 percent of 17-year-olds.<\/p>\n<p>The National Institute of Dental &amp; Craniofacial Research estimates that children will miss 52 million hours of school each year due to oral health problems and about 12.5 million days of restricted activity every year from dental symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/candostreet.com\/blog-parents\/2013\/12\/christmas-treats-and-oral-hygiene\/tooth-brush-etc\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8169\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8169\" alt=\"Tooth brush etc\" src=\"https:\/\/candostreet.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dental-Hygiene-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dental-Hygiene-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dental-Hygiene.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366\"><em><strong>The American Dental Hygiene Association states that a good oral hygiene routine for children includes:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Thoroughly cleaning your infant\u2019s gums after each feeding with a water-soaked infant cloth. This stimulates the gum tissue and removes food.<\/li>\n<li>Gently brushing your baby\u2019s erupted teeth with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and using a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste.<\/li>\n<li>Teaching your child at age 2 or 3 about proper brushing techniques and later teaching them brushing and gentle flossing until 7 or 8 years old.<\/li>\n<li>Regular visits with their dentist to check for cavities in the primary teeth and for possible developmental problems.<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging your child to discuss any fears they may have about oral health visits, but not mentioning words like \u201cpain\u201d or \u201churt,\u201d since this may instill the possibility of pain in the child\u2019s thought process.<\/li>\n<li>Determining if the water supply that serves your home is fluoridated; if not, discussing supplement options with your dentist or hygienist.<\/li>\n<li>Asking your hygienist or dentist about sealant applications to protect your child\u2019s teeth-chewing surfaces and about bottle tooth decay, which occurs when teeth are frequently exposed to sugared liquid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366\"><em><strong>Because oral problems cause such a significant loss in children&#8217;s academic performance, the Surgeon General has made children\u2019s oral health a priority.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-socializer wpsr-buttons\"><span class=\"wpsr-btn wpsr-srvc-facebook\"><div class=\"fb-share-button\" data-href=\"\" data-layout=\"button\"><\/div><\/span><span class=\"wpsr-btn wpsr-srvc-twitter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-show-count=\"false\" data-related=\"\" data-url=\"\" data-size=\"small\" data-via=\"\" data-hashtags=\"\">Tweet<\/a><\/span><span class=\"wpsr-btn wpsr-srvc-google_plus\"><div class=\"g-plusone\" data-size=\"medium\" data-annotation=\"none\" ><\/div><\/span><span class=\"wpsr-btn wpsr-srvc-linkedin\"><script type=\"IN\/Share\" data-url=\"\" data-counter=\"none\"><\/script><\/span><span class=\"wpsr-btn wpsr-srvc-pocket\"><a data-pocket-label=\"pocket\" data-pocket-count=\"none\" class=\"pocket-btn\" data-save-url=\"\" data-lang=\"en\">Pocket<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(d,i){if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(\"script\");j.id=i;j.src=\"https:\/\/widgets.getpocket.com\/v1\/j\/btn.js?v=1\";var w=d.getElementById(i);d.body.appendChild(j);}}(document,\"pocket-btn-js\");<\/script><\/span><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The holidays bring with them extra helpings of sweets.
