Across the US, there have been several weather emergencies in recent months. Many parents have been confronted with the challenge of keeping children calm while trying to protect them from harm.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n

Nicholas Garlow from HHS HealthBeat, a production of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, shared the following message\u00a0 on just this subject.<\/p>\n

Keeping little ones calm during emergencies can be difficult.\u00a0 Make sure you explain your family\u2019s emergency plan to them well before an emergency.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Different places like day care centers and schools have different plans.\u00a0 Understand those plans and explain them in kid-language before a disaster to reduce their anxiety if disaster strikes.<\/p>\n

Psychologist Dr. Dan Dodgen is with HHS\u2019s Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.\u00a0He shares, \u201cParticularly for parents, it is important to remember to monitor media to make sure that children aren\u2019t getting exposed to too much information over the air. Young children may interpret a replay as a separate event.<\/p>\n

Parents \u2013 please remember that children often follow your lead.\u00a0 If you keep calm during emergencies, there\u2019s a greater chance they will too.”<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n
