Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>Make plans to secure your property in preparation for a hurricane:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Cover all of your home\u2019s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5\/8\u201d marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Determine how and where to secure your boat.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Install a generator for emergencies.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>If in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Consider building a safe room.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To learn more about your flooding risk and how to protect yourself and your business, visit the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (NFIP) Web site,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.floodsmart.gov\/\">www.floodsmart.gov<\/a> or call 1-800-427-2419. For more detailed information on how you can protect your property, view NFIP\u2019s printer-friendly handout <em>Avoiding Hurricane Damage<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>During a hurricane, FEMA advises you to:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><em>Listen to the radio or TV for information.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Secure your home, close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Turn off propane tanks<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Moor your boat if time permits.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Find out how to keep food safe during and after and emergency.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You should evacuate if you are directed by local authorities to do so.
