{"id":2338,"date":"2015-07-24T06:04:20","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T10:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/candostreet.com\/blog-parents\/?p=2338"},"modified":"2015-07-23T17:53:32","modified_gmt":"2015-07-23T21:53:32","slug":"does-a-tv-belong-in-a-young-childs-bedroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/does-a-tv-belong-in-a-young-childs-bedroom\/","title":{"rendered":"TV Viewing and Young Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has published several articles about TV time for young children from the amount of time spent watching TV, to what is being watched and where it is being watched.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/candostreet.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/TV.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10021\" src=\"https:\/\/candostreet.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/TV-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"TV\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/TV-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/TV-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/TV-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/TV.jpg 1667w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The AAP published the findings of a study by Dr. Michelle Garrison, Kimberly Liekweg, and Dr. Dimitri Christakis from Seattle Children\u2019s on what effects watching violence on TV has on preschoolers. They studied over 600 children between 3 and 5 years of age and reviewed their media diaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Their findings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Preschoolers watched on average over an hour of TV daily (72.9 min) with the minority being at bedtime (14 min after 7pm).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Children with a bedroom TV watched 40 more minutes of TV than those without one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Children with a bedroom TV watched more TV after 7pm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Children with a bedroom TV were more likely to have parent-reported daytime tiredness (8% vs 1% without bedroom TV).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Children were more likely to have trouble falling asleep, have more nightmares, and more awakenings if in the 1 hour prior to going to bed, if they watched TV, violent or not.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fortunately, nonviolent daytime TV didn\u2019t seem to change or impair preschoolers\u2019 sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">It didn\u2019t make a difference on sleep if parents watched TV alongside their children.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>While we know that a TV, once in the bedroom, is hard to remove, we also know it is harder for a parent to monitor what is being watched.
