{"id":1026,"date":"2016-08-10T06:00:43","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T10:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/candostreet.com\/blog-parents\/?p=1026"},"modified":"2016-08-09T13:39:27","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T17:39:27","slug":"school-bus-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/candostreetny.com\/blog-parents\/school-bus-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"School Bus Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It&#8217;s almost that time again; time to think all things school.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>The following tips come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, www.nhtsa.gov, reminding us that young children need frequent reviews about bus safety and bus behavior. Children need to know the Danger Zone, which is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of being hit. Officials from nhtsa suggest:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>REVIEWING HOW TO GET ON AND OFF THE BUS SAFELY:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When getting on the bus, stay away from the danger zone and wait for the driver&#8217;s signal<\/li>\n<li>Board the bus one at a time<\/li>\n<li>When getting off the bus, look before stepping off the bus to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder (side of the road) and move away from the bus<\/li>\n<li>Stay ten feet away from the bus and never go behind the behind the bus<\/li>\n<li>Before crossing the street, take five &#8220;giant steps&#8221; out from the front of the bus, or until you can see the driver&#8217;s face, then\u00a0 wait for the driver to signal that it&#8217;s safe to cross<\/li>\n<li>Look left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped and keep watching traffic when crossing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>TAKE THE FOLLOWING BUS SAFETY STEPS:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Supervise children to make sure they get to the stop on time, wait far away from the road, and avoid rough play<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Teach your child to ask the driver for help if he\/she drops something near the bus<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If a child bends down to pick up something, the driver cannot see him\/her and the child may be hit by the bus<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Have your child use a backpack or book bag to keep loose items together<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Make sure clothing and backpacks have no loose drawstrings or long straps, to get caught in the handrail or bus door<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Encourage safe school bus loading and unloading<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If you think a bus stop is in a dangerous place, talk with your school office or transportation director about changing the location<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><strong>REVIEWING BUS RULES:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Always stay seated when on the bus<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fasten your seat belt, if there are seat belts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Don&#8217;t put any part of you out the window: arms, head, etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Always talk quietly because loud noises could make driving difficult for the driver<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">There is no eating or drinking on the bus<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Keep backpacks, books, instruments off the floor.
